So how can you gain the respect of others as effortlessly as these people do?

I recall a time when I was leading a team on a complex project with tight deadlines. One of my team members, a normally reliable individual, began missing deadlines.

Instead of reprimanding her, I took her aside to have a private conversation.

During our chat, I discovered that she was going through a difficult personal situation that was affecting her work. By demonstrating empathy and offering support, we were able to come up with a plan that allowed her to manage her personal issues while still contributing to the team.

Humility is a trait that I’ve found to be essential in establishing trust and respect. It involves acknowledging mistakes, accepting feedback, and recognizing the contributions of others.

I know, because it’s something I’ve done in the past, even if it was difficult.

There was a time early in my career when I made a significant error on a project. Instead of trying to hide it or blame others, I owned up to it openly. I apologized to my team, explained how I planned to rectify the mistake and took steps to ensure it wouldn’t happen again.

Initially, it was a little embarrassing for me to admit the mistake. Later on, I realized the value of admitting where I went wrong because my team appreciated my honesty and responsibility, which ultimately strengthened our mutual trust.

That’s why I believe practicing humility encourages an open and honest culture where trust and respect can flourish. I learned that admitting mistakes doesn’t make you weak; instead, it shows strength of character and earns you respect.

Respect begets respect. It’s something I’ve heard since grade school, and it’s become quite cheesy, but it’s true.
