A Better Australia Scholarship Program 2016

The winner of the 2016 A Better Australia Scholarship Program is Nathan Anderson from the University of Notre Dame. You can read his entry here.

There will be no scholarship program in 2017 but may return in 2018

The Expert Editor awards one $1000 scholarship each year to a student in Australia intent on making the country a better place.

We created this scholarship because we want to provide an incentive to Australian students to change the country. Today’s students have the potential to transform Australia and we want to recognise those with big agendas and make a financial contribution to help them realise it.

Background to the scholarship

Young people have always been the perfect vehicles for change as they are restless, idealistic and often unsatisfied with the status quo. In 2015, however, students are better equipped to make change than any previous generation.

The world is shrinking thanks to globalisation, speed of light communication and the unprecedented access to knowledge via the Internet. Anyone with a smartphone, which would have been considered a supercomputer 40 years ago, can access the database of human knowledge that has accumulated on the Internet, connect with like-minded people around the globe and take selfies all at the same time. Technology, and the world’s digital connectedness, means that we can all be influential.

Cynics who doubt the capability of a young person to be transformative ignore recent history, from Mark Zuckerberg to Australia’s Ruslan Koganand Stella Young.

In light of this, The Expert Editor wants to recognise and reward students with initiative, ambition and lofty idealism. An annual award of $1000 doesn’t place us in the big league of corporate philanthropy, but we believe it can assist a young Australian to step forward and make a difference. Hopefully this year’s scholarship winner will go on to change Australia in a manner that we cannot yet imagine.

We outline the reasons behind the scholarship in greater detail on our scholarship blog and provide examples of influential young Australians who have made our country a better place.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A student (undergraduate or postgraduate) enrolled in a degree at an accredited university in the Australia.
  • An Australian citizen, or permanent resident. International students are welcome to apply, but they must demonstrate how they will see through their change-making agenda after they graduate.

The deadline for this year’s scholarship program is 31 December 2016 and the winner will be announced on 28 January 2017. Please direct any questions about the scholarship to scholarship@experteditor.com.au.

How to apply

To be awarded this scholarship, students must outline in around 200 words how they intend to change Australia. Please email your entry to scholarship@experteditor.com.au and include your name, university and contact details.

The prize

The Expert Editor will award $1000 to the winning student. This money should be used to facilitate their agenda, but whether that involves paying for current educational expenses, or something else entirely, is up to them.

Keep in mind that if Steve Jobs was awarded such a scholarship in his youth, he probably would have spent the money to attend a Buddhist retreat and on LSD, and we think he made a pretty fantastic contribution to the world.
