The Expert Editor is an editing and proofreading company. Its blog covers editing, writing and language. This policy explains the standards and production practices that apply to editorial material we publish.
Our standards
Source verification. We use primary and authoritative sources where practical. Important factual claims are supportable and the sources that matter are linked, and we distinguish reporting from interpretation or opinion. We say that we interviewed, contacted or investigated something only when we did.
Accuracy and context. Headlines and summaries should fairly reflect the underlying evidence. We aim to identify uncertainty, preliminary findings, material limitations, and meaningful conflicts of interest.
Editorial independence. Advertising, sponsorship, affiliate, service, and other commercial relationships do not determine editorial conclusions. Affiliate links, and recommendations of products or services connected to Brown Brothers Media, its founders, staff or their families, are disclosed in the article, near the recommendation, not only on this page.
Corrections. We correct errors. Material corrections and substantial revisions carry a dated note explaining what changed; minor fixes that do not change what readers were told may be made without one. Articles whose central premise cannot stand are withdrawn, with a notice left at the address where appropriate.
Authors, editors, and editorial labels
A named byline identifies a real person who has approved publication under that name and any personal material attributed to them. On older articles from our archive, the byline names the original author; an editor’s note records when the article was later revised and by whom. A house-column or editorial-team byline is a desk of the publication. Every article, including work published under an editorial or house-column label, is reviewed, fact-checked and approved by a member of our team before publication. The Expert Editor and its editorial team retain responsibility for the published work.
Use of AI tools
AI tools are a substantial part of how The Expert Editor is produced. They support research, source discovery, drafting, editing, fact-checking support, headline development and post-publication quality checks, and may produce much of an initial draft. A member of our team reviews, fact-checks and approves every article before publication and remains responsible for sources, attribution, factual claims and final presentation.
AI tools must not be used to fabricate quotations, invent sources, impersonate real people, or present generated material as first-hand reporting.
Client documents submitted for paid editing services are separate from the publication’s editorial workflow and are not uploaded to third-party AI tools.
Contributed and third-party material
Articles draw on published research, style guides, dictionaries and other public sources, which we cite and link. Guest contributions, where published, are edited to these standards and carry the contributor’s name. Publication does not necessarily mean endorsement of a source or contributor’s views.
