Stanford researchers found walking lifted creative output by around 60% — and it worked just as well on a treadmill facing a blank wall, which means the ideas were coming from the movement, not the scenery
Most people who swear by walking for good ideas will tell you it’s the fresh air doing it, or the trees, or getting away from a desk and into somewhere that looks less like work.
That explanation feels right. A change of scenery seems like the obvious ingredient, the part that jars a stuck brain loose. Plenty of advice about creativity leans on some version of this idea, the notion that a new environment is what wakes up a tired mind.
It’s a tidy story, and it’s also not what a well-known Stanford study on walking and creativity actually found.
What the study actually tested
Marily Oppezzo, then a doctoral researcher in educational psychology at Stanford, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education, ran a series of experiments comparing creative output while walking against creative output while seated. Participants took standard tests of divergent thinking, the kind that ask for as many uses as possible for an everyday object, and their answers were scored for how many original ideas they produced.
Across the different versions of the experiment, walking beat sitting by a wide margin, with Stanford’s write-up of the study putting the average gain in creative output at 60 percent for people who walked rather than sat.
That result alone would have been a tidy finding about exercise and the brain. What made it more interesting was the condition that produced it.
Why a blank wall didn’t kill the effect
One version of the experiment put participants on a treadmill, indoors, facing a plain wall. No scenery, no fresh air, no change of environment beyond the fact that their legs were moving instead of still. If the outdoor setting had been the active ingredient, that condition should have flattened the results. It didn’t. Walking indoors on a treadmill in a room facing a blank wall produced roughly twice as many creative responses as sitting down, a number close enough to the outdoor-walking condition that the researchers were caught off guard by it.
Oppezzo said as much afterward: “I thought walking outside would blow everything out of the water, but walking on a treadmill in a small, boring room still had strong results, which surprised me.” If the boring room and the blank wall barely dented the effect, the scenery was never carrying much of the weight. The legs were doing the work the eyes were getting credit for.
How to actually use this
None of this means every task benefits from movement, or that a walk is a substitute for sitting down and doing careful work. But for the specific moment of being stuck, staring at a blank page or a problem with no obvious next step, there’s a fairly simple way to borrow what the study found.
Pick a boring route on purpose
Since the treadmill facing a blank wall worked nearly as well as walking outdoors, an interesting hallway or a scenic block isn’t required. A familiar, uneventful loop around a block, a hallway, or an actual treadmill all qualify. The walk itself is just a way of freeing up attention that would otherwise go toward watching where you step or what’s around you.
Bring the problem with you, loosely
Walking works best on the kind of thinking that benefits from loose association, brainstorming, early drafts, and open-ended problems rather than tasks with one correct answer. Carry the general shape of what you’re stuck on rather than trying to force a specific answer. Talking out loud or narrating ideas into a phone while walking mimics how participants in the study generated and voiced their answers.
Treat it as a starting phase, not the whole process
The ideas that come out of a walk are usually raw. They still need to be sorted, tested, and often cut down to the one or two that hold up. Plan to walk first and edit later, sitting down again once there’s something worth refining.
Where this actually fits into a normal day
The version of this advice that shows up online usually pictures a long, deliberate walk, cleared calendar, headphones off, notebook in hand. That’s one way to use it, but the study’s setup, a short stint on a treadmill in a plain room, suggests something smaller works too. A five-minute loop around the block before a meeting where you need to pitch an idea. Pacing during a phone call that’s already dragging, instead of sitting frozen at a desk. Standing up and walking to refill a glass of water instead of staring at the same paragraph for the fourth time.
None of these require blocking out an hour or leaving the building. The common thread in the research is short bursts of movement paired with a specific kind of mental task, the open-ended, generate-lots-of-options kind, not the kind that needs total stillness to get right.
What walking won’t do
It’s worth being honest about the limits here, since it’s easy to oversell a single study. Oppezzo herself was careful about that. “We’re not saying walking can turn you into Michelangelo,” she said. “But it could help you at the beginning stages of creativity.” The effect shows up on tasks that ask for a fresh angle or a burst of new options, not on tasks that require sustained focus, precision, or expert judgment. A walk is unlikely to help with double-checking a spreadsheet or drafting a legal clause. It’s aimed at the part of the process where the problem is still open and any idea, even a rough one, counts as progress.
What holds up from the research is narrower than the popular version of the advice. The mechanism looks like movement itself: getting the body going, in almost any unremarkable setting, seems to loosen something that sitting still keeps locked down.
